One of the best things you can to to increase the longevity of your hoist, trolley and bridge motors is to mount your lubricator and filter as close to the motor as possible. The reason this is important, is to insure an oil mist enters the motor. After just a couple of feet from the lubricator, the mist starts to turn into droplets. Droplets don't lubricate as well as a mist does. Air operated motors will begin to fail almost immediately if not properly oiled. Loss of horsepower, loss of torque, excessive air consumption are all part of what happens to if not properly maintained. The cost of fixing these motors can be expensive and time consuming. Colorado Crane & Hoist, Corporation specializes in maintaining air operated hoists and cranes. The key to a successful crane system is in the initial design, and the follow on maintenance. Some air motors have two oils required. One for the components located behind the piston, and one for lubricating the air used to push the piston. Crane inspection reports all too often come back not reporting on the lubricator. Or maybe you see 'low oil level' or 'oil should be topped off '. Actually, both oils should be checked. Changing the oils on a crane should be part of your established PM procedure. It certainly costs more to do periodic oil changes in the short term, but in the long run oil changes do pay the client back with better machine performance, higher reliability and longevity.
